State Park Leadership School
January 10, 2021 - January 14, 2021
Presented by North Carolina State University in cooperation with the National Association of State Park Directors
Dear Park Leaders,
After considerable review and discussion, it has been decided that we will not hold a State Park Leadership School in 2021. The economic impact from COVID-19 has affected fiscal resources available in the respective states for travel/out of state training. In fact, multiple states already have out of state travel restrictions in place.
The Board of Regents have unanimously agreed to have a “pause” in place for one year. Hopefully, we can resume the SPLS in full form at Oglebay in January 2022. The dates are January 9-13,2022. We delayed making this decision until September, hoping there might still be an opportunity. Unfortunately, that is just not the case.
On behalf of the Board of Regents and all involved in SPLS, thank you for your understanding, and know that we look forward to joining you for SPLS in 2022.

Event Management School
January 17, 2021 - January 22, 2021
I hope that this finds everyone doing well and enjoying the holiday season to the extent that the current pandemic safely allows. As everyone in the global events industry has felt more directly than most, it has been a difficult year not being able to provide the many community festivals, events and celebrations that bond our communities and cities together, especially during the holidays. With the assumed approval of one or more effective vaccines on the horizon, it is our hope that we will once again be able to return to planning, producing and providing those events at some point in the latter part of the new year, but likely with many new professional expectations to be considered. As we learn and know more, the IFEA will continue to be there for you with the information and resources that will help us all get through these challenging times together and be ready for the opportunities that await on the other end.
In the interim, I wanted to update you all on our plans for the IFEA/NRPA Event Management School, presented in partnership with the IFEA, NRPA and Oglebay National Training Center.
Following up on our earlier decision to cancel the in-person version of the 2021 Event Management School in January, we sent out a survey to all of you, to assess your interest in the possibility of creating a virtual option for the school. Based upon the responses that we received from you, and conversations with all of our partner organizations, we have now determined – in the interest of maintaining the unique (and hard to replicate) in-person experience, one-on-one networking opportunities, the extensive and high quality training provided by our professional instructors, and the special environment of the Oglebay Resort – that we will not be providing a virtual option in 2021. Instead, we will all look forward to continuing the school (with many new program updates to reflect the new world that we will all be operating in, I am sure), in-person, in January of 2022 (January 16-21).
While waiting is as hard for us, as all of you, when we begin again in January of 2022, the school and the training provided will be even more critical to your professional success, as we all adjust to the new expectations of all stakeholders, new challenges and opportunities, new health and safety regulations, and a world that will need our events to re-bond our communities and countries, more than ever.
During the upcoming new year, we will continue to provide all of you, as Event Management School participants, with free access to the IFEA’s live educational webinar series, where we will continue to provide insights and information by leading industry professionals, as we all continue to learn more about the changes that lie ahead for all of us. If you are a current member of the IFEA, I also encourage you to consider participating in our professional Affinity Groups, Covid Task Force Committees, sharing your experiences in our quarterly magazine (ie: the business of international events), and taking advantage of our many other professional resources, publications and networking opportunities.
I look forward to staying in touch in the months ahead and to hopefully seeing and celebrating with you all in-person, again, at Oglebay in January of 2022. Mark your calendars now!

Park & Recreation Maintenance Management School
January 24, 2021 - January 29, 2020
Presented by North Carolina State University in cooperation with the National Recreation & Park Association
Dear Parks and Recreation Maintenance Management School Students,
The Board of Regents, after a thorough and thoughtful review, has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Parks and Recreation Maintenance Management School.
This decision was difficult, but unanimously reached after reviewing information on the coronavirus, assessing budget and travel restrictions placed upon government agencies, collecting feedback from surveys of both the Board of Regents and returning students from each of the 2019 and 2020 Schools, as well as reviewing the Oglebay COVID-19 Response Plan for Meetings and Conferences. In the end, it became quite clear to do what is in the best interest of the students, the Board of Regents, and ultimately the School.
The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Management School intends to carry forward all student scholarship awards for the 2021 School to the 2022 School as well as waive the “skip” year” requirement (a student has three years to complete the two-year program).
We realize this School serves as an important part of your professional development. The Board of Regents, as well as the School’s supporting partners, NC State University’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, the National Recreation and Parks Association, and Oglebay Park, as well as our new corporate sponsor, the Toro Company, commits to the 2022 School continuing the tradition of training and development excellence in support of the park operations professional.
Respectfully,
Scott Payne
Director
Parks and Recreation Maintenance Management School
