A Legacy Rooted in Hospitality

Oglebay Park Resort exists today thanks to the remarkable generosity of Earl W. Oglebay, who gifted his beloved estate to the people of Wheeling over a century ago. What began as a personal retreat has grown into a 2,000-acre haven of recreation, hospitality, and natural beauty—rooted in legacy and enriched by every guest who walks its paths.

Oglebay’s story begins over 200 years ago, starting with Silas Zane, a frontiersman who was awarded a 400-acre land grant in what is now West Virginia. The land changed hands through the years, and by 1900, Earl W. Oglebay, a Cleveland industrialist, purchased a 25-acre farm from his father-in-law. Over the next 25 years, Earl transformed the property into a stunning country estate, adding buildings, landscaping, and pioneering agricultural practices.

Upon his passing in 1926, Earl Oglebay willed the land to the people of Wheeling for public recreation. In 1928, it officially became Oglebay Park, and improvements began with federal programs in the 1930s, including the construction of nature trails, picnic sites, cabins, and an outdoor theater.

Oglebay continued to grow, with notable projects like the Wilson Lodge opening in 1957, turning the park into a year-round destination. The addition of two championship golf courses, the Speidel Golf Club, and the popular Festival of Lights helped elevate the park’s appeal, making it a celebrated spot for locals and visitors alike.

With over 2,000 acres, Oglebay now offers diverse attractions such as the Good Zoo, restored gardens, hiking trails, and world-class facilities. Its rich history and ongoing enhancements make it a true gem of Wheeling, providing an unforgettable experience to all who visit. From its beautiful natural surroundings to its impressive array of activities, Oglebay is a place where memories are made and cherished for generations.
