Burmese Python

Native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, Burmese pythons are one of the five largest snake species on Earth! These impressive reptiles can grow up to 18 feet long and weigh as much as 180 pounds. In the wild, they hunt mammals as large as small deer, using their powerful constricting abilities to capture and swallow their prey whole.

While Burmese pythons are considered vulnerable in their native habitats due to over-collection for the leather trade and consumption, they’ve become an invasive species in places like Florida's Everglades. There, they’re outcompeting native species by preying on rodents, birds, and even alligators, creating a serious ecological challenge.

Monty’s Story
At the zoo, we care for a middle-aged female Burmese python named Monty. Monty is a beautiful example of her species, and she lives in a spacious habitat where she enjoys lounging and hiding in large boxes and containers—her favorite enrichment activities. We feed her a thawed rabbit every two weeks, which helps her stay healthy and active.

Stop by to see Monty slithering through her habitat and learn more about these incredible, yet sometimes misunderstood, creatures!
