Golden Lion Tamarin
Golden lion tamarins are endangered monkeys from the dry forests of Brazil, easily recognizable by their vibrant golden to orange-colored hair, which gives them their majestic name. These small primates live in family groups made up of a breeding pair and their offspring, where they forage for saps, gums, invertebrates, and sometimes even small vertebrates.
Sadly, golden lion tamarins are becoming rare in the wild due to deforestation of their natural habitat. However, zoos around the world, including the ours, are working together to help increase their numbers through scientifically managed breeding programs. We are a proud participant in the Golden Lion Tamarin Species Survival Program, which works to reintroduce these incredible animals back into their natural environment.
Meet Our Tamarins!
At the zoo, we care for a family group of golden lion tamarins, including the breeding pair Katy and Candido. These little guys are curious and love interacting with toys from our Children's Discovery Lab that guests place near their habitat.
Their diet includes a special zoo marmoset diet made up of grapes, bananas, oranges, apples, and mealworms. For fun, they enjoy puzzle feeders, foraging baskets, and a variety of toys and play pieces to keep them engaged and entertained.
