Red Panda

The red panda is an enchanting species of small mammal native to the temperate forests of the Himalayan Mountains, found in Nepal, China, Myanmar, Bhutan, and India. Known for their thick red fur and adorable appearance, red pandas are sometimes called “fire foxes” due to their vibrant coat color. Despite their name, they are more closely related to raccoons and weasels than to giant pandas.

Red pandas are primarily herbivores, although they belong to the order Carnivora. Their diet is mostly bamboo, much like their larger relatives, the giant panda. However, red pandas also consume fruits, berries, acorns, and sometimes small insects or eggs.

In the wild, red pandas are solitary and territorial, coming together mainly for breeding. They are mostly nocturnal and enjoy climbing trees to rest and forage.

The red panda is currently endangered due to hunting for its fur and the loss of habitat due to agricultural development. To help conserve these remarkable creatures, the Good Zoo participates in the red panda Species Survival Plan (SSP) in collaboration with other accredited zoos and aquariums. The goal is to ensure a sustainable and healthy population of red pandas in human care.

At the zoo, we care for three red pandas: Xena, Fia, and Keti. Each has their own unique personality, but all three share a love for climbing, exploring, and relaxing in their cozy shelters.

Their diet includes high-fiber zoo leaf-eater biscuits, fresh bamboo, grapes, and apples—nutritious favorites that help keep them healthy and active. For enrichment, they enjoy rotating resting shelters, hammocks, and new climbing structures. They’re also curious by nature and love interacting with their keepers and investigating new additions to their habitat.
