The story of Hess Hall—formerly known as the Crispin Center—begins with one of the most transformative programs in American history. Constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the building stands as a powerful symbol of national resilience and community investment during a time of profound hardship.

Established in 1933 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, the CCC was a work relief program created to combat the widespread unemployment of the Great Depression. Targeting young men between the ages of 18 and 25, the program provided meaningful work focused on environmental conservation and public land improvement. By the time it concluded, the CCC had planted over three billion trees and helped shape the modern national and state park systems across the country.

At Oglebay, the CCC’s efforts were especially profound. The Crispin Center was among the first structures built at the park, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving recreational destination. But it was only the beginning. The CCC also constructed Camp Russell, Cady Camp, and a variety of cottages—many of which are still in use today—leaving an indelible mark on both the landscape and the spirit of the park.

Today, Hess Hall continues to serve as a central hub for recreation and gathering, located steps from the outdoor pool, tennis and pickleball courts, and the historic Crispin Golf Course. In 2025, the building was renamed in honor of the Hess Family, whose major philanthropic contributions have helped guide Oglebay into a new era of enrichment and hospitality.

From its origins as a symbol of national recovery to its present-day role at the heart of Oglebay Park Resort, Hess Hall embodies the enduring legacy of service, community, and purposeful progress.
